Consultation has concluded
Due to the poor condition of the road pavement, kerbing and footpath, the City of West Torrens has scheduled the upgrade of Ballantyne Street, Thebarton between Dew Street and South Road.
The road design process has commenced and we are seeking the feedback from the community on the attached concept plan which has been developed.
Currently, the road presents a number of issues including a narrow carriageway, narrow footpaths on either side of the road and limited opportunities for appropriate tree planting. It is also noted that the existing road arrangement causes conflict between permitted on-street parking and driveway accesses, particularly to properties on the northern side of the road.
If the design of the road was to remain as it is currently presented, it is likely that future parking exclusions would be required along the full length of the street to assist with accessing driveways.
Indented parking bays (24 in total) evenly distributed along the southern side of the road. The existing formal footpath on the southern side of the road will be removed to accommodate this.
New brick paved footpath along the northern side of the road providing a wider and improved amenity.
Establishing of a substantial number of new street trees along the length of the project and on both sides of the road including: - 15 existing trees to be removed (of various sizes) - 7 existing trees to be retained - 75 new trees to be planted
Allocated locations for bin placement, to minimise impact on on-street parking on bin day.
There is currently sections of kerbing formed using slate as was common during early years of road construction. There is the intent within the project to carefully remove and recover this material and return it into the proposed new road design as a feature strip within the verge on the northern side of the road.
Based on community acceptance of the proposed road design, further communication on the tree species proposed will be sent to the community.
