Wheaton Road, Plympton (Clayton Avenue to Beckman Street)

Due to the aged condition of the road surface and kerbing, the City of West Torrens has scheduled the reconstruction of Wheaton Road, Plympton between Clayton Avenue and Beckman Street.

The road design process has commenced and we are seeking the feedback from the community on the concept plan

Concept Plan

Key elements of the concept plan include:

  • 2 metre-wide vegetated median strip

Due to the existing width of the road, this median strip can be accommodated while still preserving sufficient space for traffic and parking lanes on both sides of the road.

Access to side streets will be maintained by the inclusion of breaks in the median at each intersection. These will also enable U-turns to be undertaken.

  • Street trees
To assist in improving the urban forest and overall tree canopy cover across West Torrens, the median strip will provide space for the establishment more than 50 new trees.

Horticulture staff have nominated Jacaranda trees (refer attached fact sheet) for this location to match the existing predominate tree variety along the road.

  • Parking bays

Parking bays along both sides of the road utilising a permeable brick pavement technique.

The permeable pavement technique will help to reduce larger flows of stormwater along the road and benefit the existing street trees by allowing collected run-off from the road to infiltrate the pavement.

  • General road feature upgrade
    • The bitumen surface and rubble base of the road will be reconstructed.
    • The kerbing along both sides of the road will be fully replaced. This will require driveway crossover replacement in some locations.
    • New and upgraded pedestrian crossing ramps will be established along the street and at intersections.
    • Existing footpaths and nature strips will be retained and largely unaffected by the proposed works.
    • No special parking controls are proposed to be introduced for this location.
  • General road safety improvements
The addition of the median strip along with the contrasting road and parking bay surfaces are anticipated to encourage improved general traffic behaviour in regards to average speeds and attentiveness of drivers.
