Proposed Road Safety Projects on Barwell Avenue, Kurralta Park

In June 2022, The City of West Torrens received funding to upgrade the pedestrian crossing on Barwell Avenue at Kurralta Park Kindergarten and to implement a range of local area traffic management improvements on Barwell Avenue which would improve road safety.

Through the Department for Infrastructure and Transport's (DIT) Community Infrastructure Grants Program, grant funding of $1,000,000 was secured in order to ensure the Barwell Avenue road safety projects were designed in accordance with the Local Area Traffic Management (LATM) traffic projects for the area, which Council consulted with the community on in late February 2022.

The objective of these projects is to reduce traffic speeds and create a safe environment for all road users including pedestrians and cyclists.

Proposed Traffic Projects

Below you can view the concept and artist impressions for these projects. Whilst every effort has been made to reflect the projected layout of the traffic projects, the final geometry of the road may change, subject to detailed design, road engineering and stormwater requirements.

Barwell Avenue is a local collector road with several functions and amenities. The road section between Ritchie Terrace and South Road is a bike direct network. The section of Barwell Avenue between Beauchamp Street and South Road is also accessed by public transport buses through buses turning right from Beauchamp Street into Barwell AvenueClick image to enlarge.

  1. Harvey Street / Barwell Avenue Speed Humps
The intersection currently facilitate public transport bus access. Roundabout upgrades are not viable due to turning path limitations. The raised road platforms will reduce vehicles speeds and provide acceptable comfort for cyclists and public transport buses. The platforms will also address the known crash history at this location. The integrated pram ramps will provide a crossing facility for pedestrians in all directions (east-west and north-south).
