What's happening?

Council is working with the Government of South Australia to deliver a 700kW1,828 kWh community battery in our area as part of the emPowering SA program.

A 20-year lease over community land at Kingston Avenue, Richmond is proposed to house the battery and associated infrastructure. This site has been selected as the most suitable location following assessment of 12 sites around West Torrens.

Council must consult with the community and consider community feedback before granting a lease relating to community land. Between 19 February and 19 March 2026 members of the public can provide feedback on the proposal to lease the land for the community battery.

What is a community battery?

Community batteries provide benefits both for the community and for the wider electricity grid. The battery proposed at Kingston Avenue will store excess energy from the grid when renewable energy is abundant. It will then make that energy available at night, during periods of high demand, or when the grid needs support. By operating this way and orchestrated together with other batteries as part of a virtual power plant, it will help deliver cheaper electricity for nominated households who can't access renewable energy technologies of their own and will benefit most.
