Planned drainage works

A staged upgrade of 3 kilometres of Brown Hill Creek between ANZAC Highway and Adelaide Airport is currently underway. Part of the Brown Hill Keswick Creek Stormwater Project, the purpose of this upgrade - known as the Lower Brown Hill Creek Upgrade project - is to improve drainage and protect against flooding.

Walking and cycling path opportunity

The Lower Brown Hill Creek Upgrade presents an opportunity for Council to develop a long term plan to establish a landscaped pedestrian/cycle path along the length of Lower Brown Hill Creek between ANZAC Highway and Adelaide Airport.

The path would create an east-west walking and cycling path that connects with existing shared pedestrian/cycle paths within West Torrens, and with a planned shared path extension through the Unley Council area. Long term, the completed path would create a continuous walking and cycling link between the foothills and the coast.

Project area:

A future shared pedestrian and cycle path along Lower Brown Hill Creek would be achieved by placing a 'lid' on the upgraded channel that provides a surface for paving and landscaping. To support the 'lid' and shared path, extra reinforcement of the base and walls of the drainage channel will be needed, at an extra cost to the works budgeted for the drainage upgrade alone.

While a range of funding sources would be explored, including State Government sources, the channel 'lid' and path would be a significant financial commitment by Council, Understanding the level of community support for the idea will contribute to Council's decision making around the significant investment needed in the short term that would allow the path to be developed in stages over the coming 15 or 20 years.

The shared path concept contributes to Council and State Government goals and principles around:

Next steps

Progressing a long term plan for development of a future shared pedestrian and cycle path along Lower Brown Hill Creek involves the following steps:

  1. Collect and consider community and key stakeholder views around the concept of a future shared pedestrian and cycle path along Lower Brown Hill Creek between ANZAC Highway and Adelaide Airport.
  2. Ongoing technical investigations towards a long term strategy and implementation plan, including additional reinforcements works as part of the planned stages of the Lower Brown Hill Creek Upgrade.
  3. Consideration of costs and possible funding sources, including State Government funding.
