Between 14 April and 11 May 2025 feedback is invited on plans for new community buildings located at Karkungka, a Council reserve at Surrey Road, Keswick.
In 2023-2024 the open space at Karkungka was upgraded, with works including new tennis and futsal courts, a basketball and netball zone, pump track, cricket nets, public toilet and improved turf area.
This next stage of the redevelopment will include the upgrade of the current National Serviceman's Association (NSA) building and the former Child and Family Health Service (CAFHS) building to better serve the community and user groups.
A new 'Centre for Remembrance' will replace the existing NSA building, providing a space for the NSA, Hilton RSL Sub-branch, and other service and veteran groups to connect and engage. The facility will also be available for local community groups and residents to use for programs, activities and events. The CAFHS building will be renovated to create additional community space for programs and hire.
Construction is expected to begin in late 2025 or early 2026, with most of the open space remaining accessible to the public throughout the construction period.
The new community building is co-funded by Council and the Federal Government's Thriving Suburbs Fund.
The Karkungka community buildings will include:
- A foyer/gallery space.
- 2 meeting rooms and 2 function spaces including bars, kitchen facilities, and outdoor dining.
- NSA and RSL offices.
- Storage and service areas, and male, female, and accessible bathrooms.
