Update: Request to rename Rose Street withdrawn by applicant

After receiving a letter from the applicant seeking to withdraw their request to rename Rose Street, Mile End to Hellenic Avenue, Council passed a resolution at its 19 January 2021 meeting to not proceed any further with the consultation process or the proposal to consider renaming the street.

The initial request to rename Rose Street, Mile End was submitted by the Greek Orthodox Community and Parish of St George Thebarton and Western Suburbs SA Inc. (St George Thebarton) to acknowledge the 200th Anniversary of the Greek War of Independence. The matter was discussed by Council at its 8 December 2020 meeting and commencement of consultation to explore public sentiment was approved.

However, it has become apparent to St George Thebarton through the course of the consultation that their proposal has not been well received by many residents within this area. Accordingly, they wrote to Council on 11 January seeking to withdraw their request for the name change in the interests of community unity.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank the community for their involvement and invaluable feedback throughout the consultation process.

The full report can be viewed in the 19 January 2021 Council and Standing Committees agenda.

A request has been made by the Greek Orthodox Community and Parish of St George Thebarton and Western Suburbs SA for Council to consider renaming Rose Street in Mile End to Hellenic Avenue, to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the Greek War of Independence.

Under the Local Government Act 1999 (Section 219), councils can assign or change the name of a public road and, as such, the Council has resolved to investigate the renaming request by consulting with the local community. A report presenting the results will then be provided to Council.

The council report regarding the proposal can be viewed in the Council and Committees Agenda 8 December 2020.

  • Share I have been resident in Rose st Mile End at number 37 unit 2 for over 30 years and I was very distressed to hear of the idea to change the name of Rose st. WShile I think that the anniversary of the Greek War of Independence should be celebrated by Greeks I think that to chang the name of my street as part of that celebration takes away from the feel and history of the area overall. I know that there are a number of persons of greek origin living in our area but I think overall less than 20% - perhaps the council can think of another way to honour the celebration rather than taking away from the history of the area and my street. on Facebook Share I have been resident in Rose st Mile End at number 37 unit 2 for over 30 years and I was very distressed to hear of the idea to change the name of Rose st.
