Between 4 March and 1 April 2024 Council is seeking feedback on a proposal to change the name of Ross Street in Torrensville to 'Ross Smith Road'.

Background

The proposed renaming was requested by a resident of Ross Street, Torrensville 5031 who has experienced significant and ongoing inconvenience due to confusion of their address with the same address at Ross Street, Thebarton 5031 approximately 1.8 kilometres away.

Ross Smith Road has been proposed as an alternative name in recognition that Ross Street, Torrensville was named after aviator Ross Smith who, along with his brother Keith, completed the first successful flight from England to Australia in 1919. The Vickers Vimy bomber they flew is now displayed at Adelaide Airport. Both brothers were knighted for their achievement. Sir Ross was born in Semaphore, while Sir Keith was born in North Adelaide.

While it is usual to avoid compound (two word) road names for ease of communication, memorability, and administrative simplicity, several two-word street names currently exist in West Torrens. The choice of 'Ross Smith Road' aims to resolve inconvenience associated with confusion with Ross Street, Thebarton, while retaining the historical origins of the original naming of Ross Street, Torrensville.
