Draft Stormwater Management Plan

Consultation has concluded

The effective management of stormwater in West Torrens is of paramount importance to ensure that we adequately prepare for future community growth and climate change.

To help prepare for these changes and growth, we have developed a draft Stormwater Management Plan for our local drainage network. This plan outlines an integrated management framework for our drainage systems and includes both structural and non-structural solutions, designed to reduce the risk of flooding. It also includes strategies to help improve water quality, opportunities for water reuse and ways we can help support roadside vegetation and reduce the urban heat effect.

The draft Stormwater Management Plan is now out for public consultation and we'd like to hear your thoughts.

Purpose of the Stormwater Management Plan

West Torrens is a much sought after location to live as it's conveniently located between Adelaide's Central Business District (CBD) and the coastline. As such, we are continuing to see an increase in infill development, which is creating greater demand on our services and amenities, including stormwater systems. With more housing comes more water runoff during rainfall events; ultimately this water ends up in our streets, gutters, roads, footpaths and stormwater systems.

It's important that we effectively manage and plan our stormwater systems to accommodate this increasing demand. Changes to our climate also predict that rainfall patterns will alter, which will also affect water volumes and flows in our stormwater systems. All of these factors combined put additional strain on our network to effectively manage the retention, detention, reuse and dispersion of stormwater.

Improved stormwater management means better public safety, reduced nuisance flooding, continuation of services for our community and less disruption to our way of life. It also helps to reduce costs and insurance claims that may be associated with potential flood damage.

Stormwater Management Plan goals

  • flood protection
  • improve water quality
  • harvest and use stormwater runoff
  • maintain a healthy ecosystem
  • sustainable stormwater management and maintenance
  • desirable planning outcomes for new development and management of open space, recreation and amenity
  • effective community engagement on stormwater practices and risks.
