At it's meeting of 23 January 2024 Council considered community feedback and resolved to change the name of Kesmond Reserve to Karkungka. The meeting agenda, minutes, and audio recording can be accessed here.

Administrative processes to formalise the new name will be completed over coming months.

Consultation has concluded.

Between 27 November 2023 and 5 January 2024 the City of West Torrens is seeking feedback on its proposal to rename Kesmond Reserve, Keswick to 'Karkungka'.

'Kesmond' is a combination of the suburb names Keswick and Richmond. Richmond and Keswick are the names of places in England, given to locations in West Torrens in the mid and late 19th century respectively. The suburb names, individually and combined in 'Kesmond', are not connected to any notable historic place, person, or event associated with West Torrens.

'Karkungka' means Sheoak Place in Kaurna language, and has been selected following consultation with Kaurna Warra Karrpanthi, South Australia's organisation responsible for indigenous name conventions.

Council is currently upgrading the Reserve, and 'Karkungka' is representative of the native Allocasuarina Verticillata (Drooping Sheoak) to be planted as part of the improvement works.

Find out more about the upgrade here.
